Akiiki and her school days

Akiiki never cease to crack us up. to this day every time I remember one of her stories I get teary...so teary that I am not sure whether it is the stories she told us that I have remembered or the fact that I never get to hear the from her any more.

Story one:
When Mum was in school and they were being taught by some "mzungus" how to sing a welcome song that was meant to sound like " We are happy and jolly like fishes in the water" Unfortunately due to the mother tongue influence many of them could not pronounce the word "fishes" and instead all they could come up with was "feeces". Do not ask me how that song sounded when these two words were interchanged.....I rest my case on this one.

Story two:
When their mzungu teachers stopped them from using vernacular or any local language. The poor things were tongue tied because their English vocabulary was limited at the time. I'm not going to tell this is well as akiiki but imagine all these girls at break/recess time playing okwepena( dodge ball) and the bullies come and take their ball from them. being unable to construct a full sentence in English such as " girls bring back our ball" , the girls, left with no choice resorted to sentences/threats such as " baaaati youuuuuuu.....haaaaaay"...

I'm stopping here because I just spewed water all over myself laughing at how Akiiki narrated these stories. Her humor was unmatched!
